About Tidal Rock
I've been carving Oamaru stone for about 6 years. I have a background in masonry, and always enjoyed the creative aspects of working with stone.
I choose each piece, and take heart in the fact the limestone had its beginning as small sea snails 90 million years ago and now completes the journey as a piece of my artwork giving joy to someone, somewhere. Aesthetically - capturing a memory, or perhaps reflection of a moment passed.
The 'koru' style designs you see in my work represent the waves of the sea, with the centre carrying the essence of life.
I have always lived with and enjoy the ocean. My happiest times are around water and surfing is a major part of my life.
I feel this helps transcend my ideas into carving the stone.
I'm also drawn to the native drift wood. Recycled from its long journey down the West Coast mountains, to the rivers then out into the sea, by which it is returned. Finally it is picked up, I scout out the ones that are 'treasure' to use as a base for selected pieces of work.
Each piece is sealed to protect it from the weather, as is the wood.
